Keeping it Real Post

Like all of you, I’ve been keeping up with current events, the status of the virus and taking what actions I can for my family when/if the virus should make its way to my community.

I’ve been hearing lots of sound bites of how a dog in China contracted the virus and is in quarantine. The information I am sharing today is straight from the WHO (World Health Organization) and the CDC, (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) sites.

“To date, CDC has not received any reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19. At this time, there is no evidence that companion animals including pets can spread COVID-19. However, since animals can spread other diseases to people, it’s always a good idea to wash your hands after being around animals. For more information on the many benefits of pet ownership, as well as staying safe and healthy around animals including pets, livestock, and wildlife, visit CDC’s Healthy Pets, Healthy People website.”

What if I have the virus

“You should restrict contact with pets and other animals while you are sick with COVID-19, just like you would around other people. Although there have not been reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19, it is still recommended that people sick with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus. When possible, have another member of your household care for your animals while you are sick. If you are sick with COVID-19, avoid contact with your pet, including petting, snuggling, being kissed or licked, and sharing food. If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wash your hands before and after you interact with pets and wear a facemask.”

Kris’s Take – The Bottom Line:

First- Step back and breathe, know that this WILL pass. Don’t panic. This is but one moment in time, that yes, all of us will remember.

Second- Use common sense. If you are ill, wash your hands before and after petting your pooch. I know we do this in our home whenever we are sick. Avoid those face love kisses for a while till you’re better.

Third- If you do suspect something is not right, then call the authorities or your veterinarian and ask.

In the end, enjoy the company, joy and healing your pet brings to your home. After all, they are family!

Also, instead of passing “fake” news around, be sure to fact check the articles you are reposting. Like the one about drinking bleach!  FAKE!!  The only thing bleach will kill off is one of your organs due to toxic poisoning!

If you have questions or concerns please reach out, I’ll be happy to help you in any way I can.
