Not all Carbs are created equal

Want to take a moment to talk about Carbohydrates for a moment.

First let me share a nugget. Our brain runs on carbohydrates, it’s the brains only source of energy, when it doesn’t get enough it will start to produce cortisol (the hormone that makes us fat, among other things) too much of this can lead to you aging much faster, you feel sick and can lead to weight gain among many other systems.

I know carbs get a bad rap, that they’re viewed as evil. Let’s face it though, there’s a few kinds out there.

The “Healthy” kind (Complex Carbohydrates) like fruit, veggies, and whole grains, nuts, seeds, oats, brown rice, and quinoa.

Then there’s the “Not so Healthy” kind (Simple Carbohydrates) like, anything processed, refined grains like white bread, white rice, enriched pastas. White potatoes, sweetened drinks and of course Sugar.

The above referenced statement about our brain and its need of carbs is referring to the healthy carbs, the whole food source of carbohydrates. Too often carbs are grouped into one club, when in reality there’s 2. High protein and low carb diets are very popular these days, and I really want to stress the need of doing research and learning what YOUR body and brain need to be properly fueled.  (I”ll share in another blog about my experience with the Keto Diet)

I bring this up because yesterday a client was sharing that they were avoiding ALL carbs even fruit, they’d been told that because fruit has sugar it’s considered a “bad” carb. Not true! The sad part of this is, the client was complaining of not feeling well, headaches, and feeling tired. Can YOU guess what the underlying issue was?? Their brain was starving for its energy source!

In a later blog besides the Keto Diet, I’ll also explain the differences between the two carbohydrates and why one is a healthier choice over the other, though, I’d hope by the list alone it’d be obvious why.
