The Following is from a lecture on Organics and my personal thoughts on Organics

First off, I have to share that I honestly thought the whole Organic movement was a “hippie dippy” thing. I honestly had no idea our government is not looking out for our best interests as far as safe and healthful produce. I was raised that the government was looking out for us or had our best interests at heart, now to learn that’s not a true statement is un-nerving. Did you know that they allow pesticides that are known carcinogens be sprayed DIRECTLY on to the fruit or vegetables!!  I find this unconscionable!

Learning this so rattled me that yesterday I signed my family up to receive a local organic produce box weekly from a local establishment that provides healthful organic produce to our community. Natures Touch out of Templeton, CA.  It averages out to about $33 a box for 12 weeks, however, my and my family’s health is priceless. I’d rather be pro-active with our health vs re-active.

The biggest thing that has changed my thoughts about this subject is that in studies presented by a speaker, AFTER being washed, a commercially grown head of lettuce still had the residue of 57 pesticides on it. AFTER being washed! This is appalling and frightening at the same time.

I encourage everyone to down load the “Dirty Dozen & Clean 15” lists available at, www.   They even have an app that you can download on your phone that will give you information about the product or food item you are purchasing, to empower you to make informed decisions with what you are buying!!

When possible purchase organic the produce listed on the “Dirty Dozen” to limit your exposure to unhealthful chemicals.

Know what you’re getting: Labels and what they REALLY mean

100% Organic: Yep, you guessed it! Means the product if completely organic.

Organic: Means the product must be at least 95% organic

Made with Organic Ingredients: At least 70% of the ingredients must be considered organic

Natural: The produce contains NO artificial ingredients or added colors and was minimally processed.

Certified Naturally Grown: This is a grassroots labeling movement in the US for foods that are produced using organic methods, but the farm is NOT certified as organic.

NOTE: Since foods labeled Organic aren’t allowed to have GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms), you may want to consider purchasing organic foods.
